PEOPLE OF MECCA
Nellie Huggins and Kaleidoscope’s Culture of Creativity
During the holiday season, we here at MECCA take time to reflect on the impacts we have on the creativity of our community and its many wonderful people. As such, it is our pleasure to bring you this year’s installments of the “People of MECCA” series, which highlights the artists, educators, staff and volunteers without which MECCA could not succeed in helping to inspire and enable our community’s creative endeavors.
Each morning, the 2-5 year-olds that spend their day at Eugene’s Kaleidoscope Child Development Center get a period of “free choice” time that allows them to pick their activity. Time and again, many if not most of the youngsters choose to make art.
For Nellie Huggins the fact that young people choose art when it’s available isn’t really surprising. “Art is for everybody,” Huggins said. “If the resources to make it are there, kids are naturally drawn to it.” In fact, art and creativity are woven directly into much of the schedule — as well as the culture — at Kaleidoscope. This naturally entails the need for lots of art materials to provide opportunities for up to 16 kids at a time. And that’s where MECCA comes in.
Before starting her own childcare center, Huggins visited MECCA to load up on paper for her work at another facility. Now, she said she visits at least once a week, acquiring nearly all of Kaleidoscope’s paper and many other supplies here.
MECCA prides itself on providing free supplies for educators, and according to Huggins, it’s made all the difference at Kaleidoscope. “It would be so expensive to buy these materials somewhere else,” she said. “We certainly couldn’t have this much art available and be able to afford the variety of materials that we get at MECCA. We 100 percent would not be able to do what we do without MECCA.
At MECCA, we are passionate about our service to educators through our Teacher Resource Center and it’s through the contributions and support of people like you who make it all possible. In this season of giving, please make your year end financial donation to MECCA today and help us donate more supplies to community educators.
